Getting An ABA Approved Certificate For Paralegal

Many programs to become a paralegal that you may be interested in taking will let you complete the courses necessary online, and learn from home, but you should be aware that many of your potential future employers are going to require that you have an ABA approved certificate paralegal.  The programs approved by the ABA are designed to provide a higher, more in depth education for paralegals.

The American Bar Association program for educating paralegals is designed to help promote a higher standard for the training and education of paralegals.  All of the colleges with an approved program have gone through an extensive evaluation and review, and they become ABA certified for seven years before another evaluation is needed.  There are hundreds of approved paralegal educators throughout the United States.  There are more than 24 schools in the state of California alone, 9 in Florida and at least 1 approved school and program in more than half of the 50 states.  For a complete list of schools in each state you can look at the abanet.org web site.

The ABA approved certificate paralegal program and individual school curriculums will help teach students how to help the lawyers prepare for trials, investigate case facts, identify and utilize laws, organize and investigate information, draft contracts, write reports, and prepare documents, and assist with client needs through internships.

So how do you choose which program to enter?  Based on your current geographic location, you may have many options available to you.  Make sure that which ever school you decide to attend, whether in person, or through an online program that their paralegal program is aba approved, and that the university, college, or school itself is a member of the AAFPE, or American Association of Paralegal Education.  This may not mean much now, but when it comes to job placement, many potential employers will require you to be certified by both programs.
